Greg Solano, known in the crypto world as Garga, the mastermind behind the iconic Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection, has announced a significant shift in leadership. Solano will be stepping into the role of CEO at Yuga Labs, the creative force behind BAYC, replacing Daniel Alegre, who held the position for approximately ten months.
Alegre’s departure from Yuga Labs comes after his tenure as CEO, during which the company continued to develop the Otherside game, inspired by the BAYC universe. However, with mixed reviews for its trailer, the project faced challenges under Alegre’s leadership. In a tweet, Solano expressed gratitude to Alegre for his service while affirming Yuga Labs’ commitment to the development of Otherside.
The focus of Yuga Labs moving forward will remain on the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection and its associated ApeCoin, which has generated a staggering $2.9 billion in sales on the OpenSea NFT marketplace. Solano outlined plans for the company’s future, including the establishment of a new subsidiary, “BAYC LLC,” dedicated solely to overseeing BAYC affairs. This strategic move aims to provide the BAYC team with the autonomy needed to drive innovation and realize their vision.
“We want to unshackle the BAYC team at Yuga as much as possible to execute against its vision. More focus, more agility,” Solano stated.
Additionally, Solano emphasized plans to make the Otherside Metaverse project a more public and iterative process, allowing for greater community involvement and feedback.
Yuga Labs is also adopting a “barbell approach” to its gaming projects, balancing high-risk ventures with safer endeavors. Alongside the development of fun and mass-market games like Dookey Dash, the team is integrating crypto-native mechanics and platforms into its portfolio, reflecting a commitment to innovation and diversification within the gaming sector.
